Apple Treats for Fall
With so many different species of apples coming into season at this time of year, here are two great apple treats to enjoy.
Candy Apples
Ingredients:
- 2 cups sugar
- ½ cup water
- Red food colouring
- 8 apples
- 1 cup light corn syrup
- ¼ cup red cinnamon candies
- Candy thermometer
- 8 popsicle sticks
Wash and de-stem the apples.
On the stem end, stab apples with a popsicle stick.
Line a baking sheet with tin foil.
In a heavy sauce pan, combine sugar, corn syrup, water and cinnamon candies.
Heat mixture on medium heat to 290o.
Stir in red food colouring (enough drops to achieve the desired colour)
Immediately dip apples into heated mixture, covering them entirely.
Remove from mixture and let excess drip off.
Place apples on baking sheet and let cool.
Caramel Apples
This recipe was a great way to use up all those caramels I collected while trick or treating!
Ingredients:
- 6 apples
- 1-14 oz package of caramels
- 6 popsicle sticks
- 2 tbs water
Wash and de-stem the apples.
On the stem end, stab apples with a popsicle stick.
Line a baking sheet with wax paper.
Mix caramels with 2 tbs water and melt over a medium-low heat (or microwave
according to directions).
When melted, dip apples into caramels, covering them entirely.
Let excess caramel drip from apples.
Place apples on cookie sheet and store in fridge until set.
You can also roll the apples in nuts, sprinkles, chocolate chips, etc. while the caramel is still warm.
Note: Though easy for children four years of age and older, please make sure an adult handles all the heating and cooking.
